Artist Statement

One thing that I have learnt in my life is that "People change people.  It's the secret of life." (Yay for you if you know where that's from).  That quote, no matter where I heard it from, has really resonated with me and what I believe in.

Every piece that I do, I've realised that all my emotions get put into my art pieces and that they all very strongly reflect that.  I've found that I have incorporated some very personal issues and experiences in my pieces and that they have enhanced the overall message that I try to convey.

Through working with that mindset, it has created a theme throughout my pieces of work: the navigation of a teenager's journey to adulthood.  It is a concept that is very close to my heart and I believe that it is one that most of my peers would be able to relate to.

For each of my pieces, I try to tell an experience or describe an a problem with personal identity.  I've struggled with the issue of finding myself in the past, and I want to show that these issues happen as well as it being possible to evolve and change our perspectives of ourselves.

I find that I tend to work with medias that involve using a single tool, like a pen, paintbrush or a craft knife rather than work with a multitude of medias.  I like to focus on finding different ways to create different effects or to focus on detail with a single tool.  I love pieces that include a lot of intricate detail and has a delicateness to it where it seems like it could break if you touch it.  I think that I'm the most impressed with the simplicity linework yet when it is done in most complicated ways.

I would say that my pieces have turned out well if they have achieved what I've written in the previous paragraphs.  If it can communicate my message, aligns with my style of intricate detail, and if know I have put in aspects of my personal experience as well as my own emotions.  Having been on the side of the audience, I believe that the audience responds to emotions and connections directly when seeing a piece of artwork and I hope to be able to convey emotions and experiences in my own art pieces.
